PROJECT 7: A CORRIS RAILWAY-INSPIRED GROUND FRAME HUT

Ground frame huts are fairly rare on British narrow gauge, but they did exist, often erroneously being described as ‘signal boxes’. This was stretching the point somewhat for something that may have contained less than half a dozen levers, and which in many situations was not connected to any signals. The main purpose of those huts that did exist was to cover and make secure the lever frame assembly, which in most cases was left open to the elements, as shown in the illustration of the frame at Towyn.

Adding a ground frame hut to the layout project is again stretching the point, but bearing in mind the late twenties period and in order to complete the construction ideals for the layout, one was added to the buildings list using a reasonably priced Wills kit, for the usual reason that it is freely available from the trade; though the kit was to be altered and improved using the examples on the Corris Railway as inspiration. To build these exactly would involve scratch-building as the doors are in a different position and the frame and boarding construction is vastly different. Using the kit as a starting point for an exact model would therefore be a waste of time. However, by altering the windows slightly, to long thin panes, the flavour of the Corris huts can be gained, as well as making it look unlike all the other Wills huts that appear on layouts.

Tip: Look at building kits as sets of adaptable parts, rather than set packs that have to be built a certain way.
